Happy Birthday Aishwariya - All About Her

Aishwariya Rai, born on November 1, 1973, made the world stand up and look at her in 1994 when she was crowned Miss World. She has come a long way since then and has won for herself many epithets, all centring around her ethereal beauty of course. She has been featured on the cover of prestigious magazines like the Time magazine and has even featured in talk shows like the David Letterman talk show and on Oprah as well. She is a frequent visitor to Cannes, was a member of the jury there in 2003 and successfully straddles both Bollywood and Hollywood, where she has she made her presence felt with Provoked, released earlier this year

Married into the one of the most powerful parivaars of the Hindi film industry, the Bachchans, Aishwariya Rai has the Bachchans, Aishwariya Rai has cemented her place forever in the annals of Indian cinema as one of the most beautiful and dignified actresses to have graced the silver screen. The transition from modeling to films seemed almost natural. Ash followed the route taken by so many models and beauty queens before her and stepped into the world of films. But she hit fame only with her second Tamil film, Jeans, directed by Shankar. After that, the Bollywood sat up and took notice of her. Director Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam (1999) opposite Salman Khan and Ajay Devgan was the film which propelled her into the top rung of heroines. Her position was further solidified by her portrayal of the Paro in Bhansali's opulent recreation of Sarat Chandra's Devdas (2002). The film, in which she starred opposite Shah Rukh Khan and Madhuri Dixit went on to give her much critical acclaim and won her the Filmfare Award for Best Actress that year. It also had a special screening in Cannes as well. Of course, Ash did have her share of good movies even before this, there was Kandukondain Kandukondain in Tamil, and Subhash Ghai's Taal which earned her much praise and attention for her acting skills and not just her breathtaking looks.

But with Devdas, she was finally a name on the international circuit as well and got the opportunity to work in a few Hollywood projects as well. She added another laurel when she bagged the lead role in Rituparno Ghosh's Choker Bali (2003), an adaptation from Rabindranath Tagore's novel by the same name. Her international debut was in Gurinder Chadha's Bride and Prejudiuce (2004), based on Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, and was quickly followed by The Mistress of Spices. The films may not have done very well commercially, but they sure won her a lot of praise. Her other English film, The Last Legion was also released earlier this year.

Back on the home turf, despite stuff competition from Rani Mukherjee, Ash has still managed to hold her own with Dhoom 2, where she was cast opposite Hrithik Roshan and Mani Ratnam's Guru opposite husband, Abhishek Bachchan. But on the flip side there were the disappointments, Umrao Jaan flopped miserably. But coming up for release now is Ashutosh Gowarikar's Jodha Akbar, an epic romance which will be releasing early next year.

Year 2007 has been specially generous to Ash as she got married on April 20. She has managed to put the ugly episodes in her life (her traumatic relationship with Salman Khan, and her rebound relationship with Vivek Oberoi) behind her and is raring to scale new heights. She has the backing of a very loving husband and doting in-laws behind her. This lady is sure to go places. And Movietalkies.com would like to wish her a very happy birthday!
